CHAPTER SIX

The next morning the rain stops, and the sun appears beautiful. Charlie and I get an early start. Two hours later, we reach the other side of the ridge to where Snakey says Blue Bill is camped. Snakey travels with us. When we arrive, the fire still smokes but no Blue Bill. The weather clears, so we ride further, hoping to find him.

Blue Bill sits looking into the crystal ball, and he can see us not far behind. Being low to the ground, Blue Bill moves slow.

We gain ground on him. Blue Bill hurries down the trail towards Grangus, planning to make Goo Goo Ga Gus his bride. Bill has not seen her in years and Sneener being back in the picture stirs old feelings in his heart.

We travel all day and stop in a clearing to rest. Once reaching the clearing, Charlie notices a river with a boat tied to a tree. As we come to the vessel, we meet a strange-looking fellow fishing.

"Hey O," the odd fellow says.

"Good day," I reply.

After explaining our journey, the strange fellow says he can guide us down the river in his boat.

"That will be helpful," I say.

We pile into the boat, and the weird-looking fellow paddles the boat down the river.

"Why do you have purple skin, mister," Charlie asks.

"Born that way.”

Besides his purple skin, he has feet like a duck, his toes webbed together. This being's head is much smaller than the rest of his body and has long pink hair that stands straight up at least three feet upwards from his head.

Only thirty minutes downriver, we hit treacherous waters, scaring Charlie. Still, I hold on to him tight, reassuring him of our safety. I can feel his little body trembling. The water regains calmness as we float at a reasonable speed. I notice that the river turns and meanders in the opposite direction.

"Is this the right way?"

"Nope," the peculiar-looking fellow says. I have taken you four hours in the opposite direction away from Blue Bill. He can work magic through his crystal ball, remember? In other words, I am not real."

Then the strange-looking fellow vanishes. Luckily, the paddles don't. I paddle the boat to shore, realizing we will have to follow the river backward on foot by walking back to where we met the strange-looking fellow. It is too difficult to paddle that far upstream.

"The being is right, Charlie, Blue Bill can use magic in the crystal ball, he just tricked us."

"Bill is being sneaky to us, huh, Pah Pah."

"Yes, he is. I wish we still had that crystal ball."

"Me too Pah Pah."
